HEY VA! HAVE YOU HEARD? February 27, 2003
Last October, William Wright, Jr., of Portsmouth, Va. was hired as a
computer-assisted design operator after a six-month internship and completion
of a CAD Drafting and Design certificate program at a local community college.
No one was happier with the news than Kathy Herd, vocational rehabilitation
counselor at the Roanoke VA Regional Office out-based in Hampton, Va. She had
worked for many months with 80 percent service-disabled veteran who was
homeless when he first contacted her. She helped the seriously disabled
veteran find a place to live and kept him in the voc rehab program. He wrote a
special letter to the Regional Office thanking VA, and Ms. Herd, in
particular. "I don't know where I'd be today without you and VR&E."
HEY VA! HAVE YOU HEARD? February 28, 2003
From a letter to the director of Tahoma, Wash., VA National Cemetery - "I want
to express my long overdue appreciation to "Tahoma Cemetery" in Kent,
Washington and the VA for the beautiful Military Service/Honors for my friend
John. I had the honor of being included with John's immediate family at his
burial in Tahoma National Cemetery. The service and honors conducted for John
were incredibly touching. The color guard who escorted John's mother to the
beautiful commitment shelter, the presentation of the United States flag, gun
salute, the statuesque wall/plaque that holds John's ashes and, last but not
least, the solemn rendition of Taps -- all were conducted in such a honorable,
respectful and comforting manner to those of us present who were immersed in
sorrow. I would like to close by saying that knowing John enriched my life. So
I thank you for the most fitting and well-deserved ceremony performed in
tribute to a great American citizen and veteran."
